Creative Contracts: Beyond the Handshake and the Form Contract
SJDC/Kellen Gallery at The New School (2 W. 13th St., Manhattan)
Barter, registration required

Participants will gain the skills to negotiate and write contracts which aid their creative endeavors. This class would be interactive and discussion-based, and would have three main goals: – understanding the situations in which a creative person might be better served by using a contract instead of a handshake agreement. – understanding the rights and obligations imposed by New York’s legal system on certain relationships between creative people and consumers, even in the absence of any written contract, such as an artist’s rights if a gallery damages their work. – finally and most extensively, we’ll work on understanding how the process of making a contract can be a creative endeavor in itself.
