This month, we’re thrilled to be partnering with Groupmuse - a social network that connects classical musicians to local audiences through concert house parties (!) - and will have a real live string quartet accompanying the evening’s final lecture! Music is a powerful force, and has been used to affect and express moments of great change throughout history. This June, with the help of Groupmuse, we’re discussing the monumental role played by music during tumultuous times. The Night’s Lecture’s Include: Beatlemania & The British Invasion The British were coming and SASS co-founder Larissa Hayden will tell you why! 99 Problems but a Pitch Ain’t One Colin Dickey discusses the recent history of musical pitch, the mysterious uses of 432 Hz tuning, and the various conspiracies–involving Nazis, fringe libertarians and others!–surrounding why we tune our instruments the way we do. Shostakovich & The Secret Police (accompanied by the Groupmuse string quartet!)* Shostakovich wrote an amazing piece of music the night he thought he was going to be assassinated by the Russian secret police. Hear the tunes and the tales from Groupmuse!
