The OIKOS working group at NYU's Institute for Public Knowledge invites you to a discussion of Bethany Moreton's To Serve God and Wal-Mart: The Making of Christian Free Enterprise, an account of how the corporate ethos of the global mega-corporation Wal-Mart arose within and shaped the cultural milieu of the American Ozarks. Through meticulous historical research Moreton shows how the moral orientations of Christian fundamentalism helped inculcate retail with a contradictory set of ideals that promote traditional relationships to family and community even as they are undercut by the conditions of working in free-enterprise at the end of the twentieth century.
