To kick off Women's History Month, this tour with the Morris Jumel Mansion (MJM) Executive Director Carol S. Ward will focus on the diverse women, both historical and more contemporary, who made the Mansion their home. From Mary Philipse Morris, an eighteenth century Dutch merchant who first lived in the Mansion, to Eliza Jumel, the longest residing and most colorful occupant of the house. The discussion will also include information on the women below stairs--the slaves and servants--who doggedly managed and maintained the Mansion on a daily basis. In addition, we'll find out how the Mansion became a museum under the guidance of the Daughters of the American Revolution and how the tradition of women taking care of historic houses is continued today through the female staff who are stewards of the Mansion as it gears up to celebrate its 250th Anniversary.
