Perfume is so much more than a choking cloud of terrible cologne making your subway commute less enjoyable. Its history extends back at least as far as civilization itself, and is tightly interwoven with the paths of alchemy, witchcraft, herbalism, and science. This class with local NYC perfumer/alchemist Asc Helvetius will shed light on the scent-mixing process, the eccentric or entertaining histories of ingredient sources, the potent ties between herbalist magic and scent, and will even allow attendees to finally experience what some of these familiar ingredients actually smell like in person. Musk? Bergamot? Petrichor? It’ll be there. Think you hate patchouli? Maybe you’ll come away with a new appreciation of it.
