Since 2000, Community Works has demonstrated a commitment to sharing history and culture through its award-winning harlem is… series, which has commemorated the people and important places of Harlem through exhibitions, performances and educational programs throughout New York City. This exhibition, harlem is…A State of Mind, is an outgrowth of that series, and weaves a story about the historic and contemporary creative communities that have come to identify Harlem around the world. The exhibit features visual works created by master to emerging artists and includes paintings, photography, digital compositions, collage, fiber arts and archival posters that celebrate the community’s vital artistic landscape. It is this force, lifeblood, and broad spectrum of the arts that has provided a backdrop for a century’s worth of legacy-building and activism above 110th Street. harlem is…A State of Mind brings these powerful interpretations to MIST Harlem – an increasingly important institution in its own right – and captures just a glimpse of the people, practices and venues that continue to color this community’s lasting and international fame.
Participating artists and contributors include Beatrice Lebreton, Diane Davis, Grace Williams, Hubert Williams, JaSon Auguste, John Reddick, Laura Gadson, Makeba Rainey, Michael Cummings, Ming Smith, Ozier Muhammad, Paul DEO, Ramona Candy and Tafa. Curated by Omo Misha on behalf of Community Works.
