Beginning in August 2016, The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. will deepen its commitment to discovery, development and presentation of superior theatre with four consecutive weekends of exciting and innovative productions showcasing up-and-coming Black playwrights through the Emerging Playwrights Competition. The selected plays are: Hurricane House, by Wendell E. Carter and directed by Justin Lord, which features a crisis-stricken Southern family within a house "in the eye of the storm" employing a semi-realist dramatic structure (August 11-14); Hercules Didn't Wade in the Water, by Michael A. Jones and directed by Charles Weldon, depicts the struggle for life and unfulfilled dreams amidst Hurricane Katrina (August 18-21); Swing, by Holly M. Eaton and directed by Jeannine Foster-McKelvia, explores the extreme consequences resulting from an attempt to escape a past that remains current and constant (August 25-28); and Le Blanc, by Brian Wade and directed by Fulton C. Hodges, showcases a non-linear tale of the rags-to-riches-to demise and redemption of a world famous dancer (September 1-4).
