Leading indie music luminaries come together at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House to pay tribute to visionary cellist, composer, and electronic music pioneer Arthur Russell. The fallen star was a one-of-a-kind force in New York City’s legendary downtown music scene in the 1970s and ’80s, leaving behind a beguiling, ahead-of-its-time body of work that spans from avant-garde classical to hypnotic minimalist disco to haunting, plaintive folk. Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell! honors his legacy with reverent performances by artists like Arcade Fire member Richard Reed Parry, indie pop act Cults (“Go Outside,” “You Know What I Mean,”), R&B chillwave vocalist Devonté Hynes (aka, Blood Orange), singer-songwriter Thao Nguyen of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down and Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears. For this special performance, these and other eclectic musicians — many of whom contributed to the 2014 Yep Roc Records Red Hot tribute album — will breathe new life into Russell’s spellbinding compositions.
