Actor-singer-activist Harry Belafonte became known as “The King of Calypso” in the ’50s for his huge Caribbean-themed pop hits “The Banana Boat Song” — with its signature “Day O” call — as well as “Jamaica Farewell” and “Jump in the Line.” Jeff Zuniga and his band recreate those signature steel-drum tunes and more as part of the Flushing Town Hall’s 35th Anniversary season Jazz Live and World Music series. 1956’s Calypso is credited as the first album by a solo artist ever to sell more than a million copies, and its follow-ups, 1957’s Belafonte Sings of the Caribbean and 1961’s Jump Up Calypso both reached No. 3 on the Billboard charts.
