According to Bataille, a kind of horror (and hence modesty) regarding the shape and size of the foot begins in the modern era. What is it about this part of ourselves that touches the ground? How do we fashion it, and what are we doing when we do so? Cinderella, ballet shoes, high heels, foot binding, men’s dress shoes… All to help us with the perennial question, “whatever shall I wear?”
