Spend some time at the 10th annual New York Uke Fest, and you’ll feel like you’re on vacation in Waikiki — without leaving the city. The 2013 fest opens on Thursday with a premier of the animated documentary The Adventures of Ahmed. Accompanying the film is live music from the Small World Project, a Canadian ukulele group that composed the soundtrack for the 1926 film using the stories and folk tales of the Arabian Nights. Stay after and enjoy a showcase and open mic. Friday and Saturday night’s concerts bring you a taste of the best ukulele jams from around the world. Friday night features Small World Project, Jim Beloff (author of The Ukulele — A Visual History), French artist Nico’o and festival organizer Ken Bari Murray. Two-time Grammy nominee Raiatea Helm (Hawaii), singer/songwriter Victoria Vox and Japanese musician Hiro Saito perform on Saturday night.
