Catch this limited engagement performance of Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Antigone from Marvell Repertory Theatre, New York’s only professional theater devoted exclusively to producing new and enduring works in rotating repertory. Marvell’s Spring 2013 project, The Ties That Bind, features this bold new production staged by artistic director Lenny Leibowitz. A new king comes to power in a city devastated by civil war. Desperate to establish order, he demands that the body of a rebel attacker be left to rot in the streets. Anybody who defies him risks death. But the dead soldier’s outraged sister, consumed with grief, is determined to give her brother proper burial rites. As these two monumental wills collide, we learn that love can be just as dangerous as war.
