Come celebrate the release of the new collection by the author of True Grit, The Dog of the South and other novels, with humor by Roy Blount Jr. and Calvin Trillin, music by Rhett Miller, a performance of Portis’s only play, and more!

Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany is the first new book in more than twenty years from the author of True Grit, The Dog of the South and three other beloved comic novels. Spanning the breadth of his fifty-year career from his coverage of the civil rights movement to satirical fiction about the Internet age, Escape Velocity collects for the first time his journalism, travel writing, short stories, memoir and even a never-before-published play. As critic Ron Rosenbaum has written, Portis “will come to be regarded as the author of classics on the order of a twentieth-century Mark Twain, a writer who captures the soul of America.”

Hosted by editor Jay Jennings and sponsored by Oxford American magazine, the evening of music, readings and comedy will feature:

* humorist Roy Blount Jr., author of twenty-three books, panelist on NPR’s “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” and longtime Portis fan

* singer-songwriter Rhett Miller of the Old 97’s, who will play covers inspired by Portis’s 1966 story on Nashville, as well as new songs of his own

* author and New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin

* a staged reading of a scene from Portis’s only play to date, Delray’s New Moon, recently excerpted in the Oxford American and published in full in the book
