The Queens Theatre kicks off its latest season with an exhilarating new musical about “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald. Ella! weaves together the myth, memory and music of this beloved songstress as it tells the uplifting and poignant story of one of the greatest jazz/pop vocalists the 20th century. The musical is set in 1966, when the fabled entertainer is preparing for one of the most important concerts of her career. As she jams with her musicians (including trumpeter Louis Armstrong) and gets ready to take the stage, Ella reflects on her life, her secrets and her love of music. Featuring more than a dozen of Fitzgerald’s most famous hits, including “A Tisket, A Tasket,” “How High the Moon,” “That Old Black Magic” and “They Can’t Take that Away from Me,” this swinging new musical invites audiences to fall in love for the first time, or revisit an old favorite with the magic and soul of Ella Fitzgerald.
