NYC Dumpling Eating Contest
Smorgasburg (East River Waterfront between N. 6th & N. 7th, Brooklyn)
Chef One’s chicken-and-Napa cabbage dumplings are certainly tastier and, when being professionally chowed, the crunchy little pillows are decidedly classier than hot dogs. Last year’s record was 69 dumplings in 2 minutes for the men’s division and 37 in 2 minutes by the women. How many will be eaten this year: 50? 60? 70?! Come witness the 9th Annual Chef One Dumpling Eating Contest at Smorgasburg this Saturday, Sept. 15, kicking off at 1pm. The real reason we’re playing host is that it’s a fundraiser for our fine friends at the Food Bank for New York City.
Joe Menchetti was the men’s winner last year, the seventh consecutive year he’s taken home the $1,000 prize money. This year, the mighty East River Ferry is donating a ticket for a free ferry ride for every dumpling consumed by the winner. Floria Lee was the women’s champion; will she reclaim the title this year? Will she eat 38, 47 or more? There are 23 women competing and just as many men, all of them currently prepping their bellies to receive as many dumplings as they can swallow in 120 seconds. And for all of us laypeople who can’t resist a plate of potstickers amid the fervor of competition, you can also buy some from the Food Bank table and help the hungry.
