American Villain: Selections from Anti-American Films from Abroad

In Hollywood cinema, American audiences are used to cheering for Uncle Sam—be he in uniform or operating on his own as a maverick—against devious Russians, dastardly Chinese, dangerous Arabs, or whatever foe might challenge the USA that day.

But in the rest of the world, the blockbuster action film has recently been copied and reworked, with Americans cast as the villain. Cinebeasts presents a night of anti-American action film excerpts rarely seen in this country, with Eastern European, East Asian and the Middle Eastern cinema all represented. A panel discussion with Richard Peña (of Film Society of Lincoln Center) and Alan Williams (of Rutgers University) will follow the screening.
