The 2012 River To River Festival kicks off with the Bang on a Can Marathon. Bang on a Can continues to celebrate 25 Years with its incomparable 12-hour super-mix of boundary-busting music from around the corner and around the globe. The 2012 Bang on a Can Marathon will feature rare performances by some of the most innovative pioneering musicians of our time side-by-side with some of today’s newest exciting young artists. Some highlights include Bang on a Can All-Stars playing the near impossible works of Conlon Nancarrow plus music by David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, David Lang and more; a monumental 6-piano ensemble of New York’s most virtuosic players on Steve Reich’s Six Pianos and Julia Wolfe’s My lips from speaking; experimental sound pioneer Alvin Lucier performing his iconic I am sitting in a room; indie guitar sensation Kaki King; a rare gathering of Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening Band transforming the Winter Garden into a mind-blowing underground cistern; brand new reverberations of the exceptional jazz pianist Matthew Shipp joined by 5 extraordinary pianist-accomplices; the premiere of Michael Harrison’s sonic exploration for astonishing cellist Maya Beiser with film by Bill Morrison; Newspeak making their Bang on a Can debut with music by David T Little, Oscar Bettison, and Ruby Fulton; Talujon playing the Girard Grisey’s atmospheric surround-sound epic le Noir de l-Etoile together, and much much more.
