Join MOCA for a day of family festivities in celebration of the Lunar New Year! MOCA will ring in the year of the Dragon with family-friendly tours, workshops, a lion dancing performance, and arts and crafts activities.

Lion Dance Performance and Workshop
Participate in the ancient art of the Chinese Lion Dance with the United East Athletic Association. Learn about why we see Lion Dancing during the Lunar New Year and participate in the ancient art of the Chinese Lion Dance with the United East Athletic Association. All ages

Learn Mandarin with Gordon & Li Li
Celebrate the Year of the Dragon by learning Mandarin with Gordon & Li Li. Gordon & Li Li are cousins. Gordon is from Brooklyn, New York and Li Li is from Beijing, China. When Li Li travels to Brooklyn to meet Gordon, they realize they speak different languages. Have fun learning simple, everyday words in Mandarin with local author, Michele Wong McSween. Art project and book signing will follow the reading. Best for ages 6 and under.

New Year Festival Dances
Margaret Yuen and the Red Silk Dancers present an interactive program of festival dances to welcome the year of the Dragon. Join in the snaking of the Dragon Dance for prosperity; feel the spirited Peace Drum Dance of Northern China; be inspired by the power of the Wushu Sword; and be captivated by the swirling Red Silk ribbons dancing in the air! All ages

Calligraphy Demonstration
New Year spring couplets are simple decorations of well wishes for homes and businesses. Multitalented artist and children’s book author, Mingmei Yip, will conduct a workshop about the significance of this New Year tradition, and make spring couplets to give away. Ages 6 and up

DROP-IN ARTS & CRAFTS

Ongoing from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Celebrate the year of the Dragon by making your own Lunar New Year decoration at one of our arts and crafts activity stations: Paper Folding, Knot Making, and Dragon Pop Up Book Making. All ages
