Saturday, December 10th & Sunday, December 11th: 3rd Annual WORD Holiday Open House

3rd Annual Holiday Open House
WORD (126 Franklin St., Brooklyn)

This year’s Holiday Open House, Saturday December 10 and Sunday December 11, continues our tradition of nibbles, holiday movies in the basement, guest authors, and fundraising!

Thanks to Hachette Audio, we’ll have plenty of donuts from Peter Pan — Tina Fey’s favorite shop. You’ll also be able to enter to win a prize basket including the audiobook edition of Bossypants, read by the hilarious author herself. One prize will be awarded for each day, so be sure to stop by.

To help you find just the right gift for the readers in your life, we’ll have authors presenting their picks for the season, as well as gift-wrapping and helping out around the store. Our line-up is as follows (additional authors may be announced):

Saturday, Dec. 10
2 p.m.: Book recommendations from Sarah MacLean (The Love By the Numbers series), Michael Showalter (Mr. Funny Pants), and Emma Straub (Other People We Married)
3 p.m.: Kids’ book recommendations from Michael Buckley (NERDS, The Sisters Grimm) and Fiona Robinson (What Animals Really Like)

Sunday, Dec. 11
2 p.m.: Book recommendations from Josh Ritter (Bright’s Passage) and Haley Tanner (Vaclav & Lena); pencil-sharpening with David Rees (Get Your War On!)
3 p.m.: Kids’ book recommendations from Peter Brown (Children Make Terrible Pets), Michelle Knudsen (Argus), and John Bemelmans Marciano (Madeline at the White House)

Plus, gift-wrapping with Gabrielle Hamilton (Blood, Bones & Butter), time TBD!

Through our friends at the Greenpoint Food Pantry, we’ve got two opportunities for you to give back. All donations for gift-wrapping will benefit the food kitchen, which hands out between 500 and 600 bags of groceries per week, and serves a hot meal to between 50 and 60 individuals each Wednesday. In addition, we’ll be collecting gift cards for needy children in the neighborhood. You can purchase a gift card in the store (suggested minimum, $10) to be given to a local young reader, who will then get to pick out a book for their very own!
