To celebrate the publication of Acts of War: Iraq and Afghanistan in Seven Plays, edited by Karen Malpede, Michael Messina, and Bob Shuman, members of the cast of Prophecy will reunite to read selections from all seven plays in the book. George Bartenieff, Kathleen Chalfant, Brendan Donaldson, Najla Said, and guest Loren Sharpe will read from the following: Victoria Brittain and Gillian Slovo’s Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom; Bill Cain’s Nine Circles; David Hare’s The Vertical Hour; Karen Malpede’s Prophecy; Simon Stephens’s A Canopy of Stars; Lydia Stryk’s American Tet; and Naomi Wallace’s No Such Cold Thing.

Writing with poetic passion, humor, and erotic charge, these plays bear witness to the realities of war for combatants and civilians alike, and ask what it means to be a citizen in a democracy at war. The book also includes an introduction by Malpede that sets the plays in the broader contexts of the theater’s roots and recent history, and a galvanizing foreword from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Chris Hedges.
