14th Street Y (344 East 14th St., Manhattan)
As part of the Green Design Lab, Solar One educators Joe Chavez and Fronsy Thurman have been working with students at LaGuardia Arts High School. As part of their program with Solar One, they’ve created a public art exhibit now on display at the LABA gallery in the lobby of the 14th Street Y.
Conceived as part of the partnership between Solar One and the multi-media theater piece WATER: the secret life of objects (coming to Solar One in workshop form in summer 2011), the exhibit is a collaboration between the WATER team, Solar One, the students and the 14th Street Y. The show explores water as both an essential element and potential threat for human life, with the works based on stories, memories and myths about water collected from the various constituencies of the Y, from preschool children to seniors. The works were created primarily using found, recycled and repurposed materials from Materials for the Arts.
The show has been installed in stages, mimicking rising sea levels. Some works may be offered for sale, with proceeds benefiting the LaGuardia Arts Environmental Club, while others may be used in the production of WATER itself.
Please join us for a closing reception for [im]pure essence on Tuesday, March 15 at 7pm. Along with refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artists, we’ll be having activities like “water confessions”, where guests will be able to share their water-related thoughts, hopes and fears and create origami fish and other water creatures to take home. Or you can see the show anytime between now and March 15 – just stop in at the 14th Street Y!
