ARTSpeak: A Multipart Symposium on Diversity and Art
Fashion Institute of Technology, Katie Murphy Amphitheater (27th St. & 7th Ave., 1st Fl. of D Building, Manhattan)
Wangechi Mutu studied art and anthropology at Cooper Union before going on to an MFA at Yale University. She creates painted and collaged images of female figures, with photographic fragments of idealized women collected from print magazines. Her work criticizes the portrayal of black women as either tribal aborigines or hypersexualized pinups. Her work has been seen by critics as commentary on a variety of feminist and racial issues.
