Hollywood Shuffle & I’m Gonna Git You Sucka
Legion Bar (790 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn)
8pm start

Kings County Cinema Society is rolling out a month of hand-picked free screenings for Black History Month all over Brooklyn. Scathing showbiz satires, James Baldwin docs, proto-blaxploitation.

First, git out for Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle (1987, 77min) at 8pm. Townsend directs and stars as an actor limited to stereotypical roles because of his ethnicity. As he dreams of making it as a successful actor and makes his rounds, this overlooked satire takes a hilarious look at African American actors in Hollywood.

Stay for Keenan Ivory Wayans’ I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988, 88min) at 9:30. A dead-on parody of blaxploitation, a black hero wannabe reunites former black heroes from the 70s to help him get revenge on Mr. Big. Full of iconic actors from the original classics: Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas and Isaac Hayes star.
